The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has introduced significant changes to how businesses manage their forklift fleets. These regulations aim to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency across the state. If you're a warehouse manager or fleet owner in the Inland Empire, here's what you need to know.

Key Regulatory Changes

CARB is pushing businesses to adopt zero-emission forklifts, with the following key dates to keep in mind:

  • By 2026, manufacturers can no longer produce or sell Class IV and Class V large spark-ignited (LSI) forklifts for use in California
  • By 2028, large fleets (26+ units) must begin phasing out LSI forklifts
  • By 2029, smaller fleets will also need to start phasing out these older models

The shift to zero-emission forklifts means that businesses must start planning their transition now to avoid disruptions in the future.

The Shift to Electric Forklifts

Switching to electric forklifts isn't just a one-time investment—it requires strategic planning:

  • Infrastructure Overhaul: Warehouses will need to install charging stations and possibly redesign their layouts to accommodate charging areas.
  • Training Needs: Electric forklifts operate differently from their gas-powered counterparts. Operators will need new training to manage and maintain electric models efficiently.

At Precision Material Handling (PMH), we’re committed to providing up-to-date information and solutions that align with these regulatory changes, helping our clients navigate the complexities of transitioning to zero-emission forklifts.
